Reaching higher

Fenton is a diverse and vibrant community. Fenton Area Public Schools shares many of the same qualities. To help the continued success of FAPS, I am running my campaign on a handful of improvements to be made to the district.

Increased Opportunities

More trades programs

As a graduate of a cosmetology program that I took during my senior year of high school, I am an advocate of trade programs. Trades are an excellent way for students to start earning livable wages straight out of high school, especially those that might not be college bound. It needs to communicated better of what Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes are available to students. As a member of the School Board, I will advocate for a stronger partnership between FAPS and the Genesee Career Institute, as well as additions of CTE classes (that aren't business-orientated) offered in-district.

More language classes

The Department of Education requires that high school students take two years of a foreign language to graduate. FAPS offers limited foreign language classes. As a member of the School Board, I will advocate for more foreign language class selections (such as German or ASL, for example). This will give students increased opportunities to pursue credit for learning languages they have interest in and better prepare them for our multi-cultural society.

Safe environments

Equality for all students

In order for students to feel safe and comfortable at school, they need to feel seen and heard. There are minorities in FAPS that have been and are currently underrepresented. That needs to change. As a member of the School Board, I will advocate to make sure the students in the minority feel seen, heard, and welcome by the district.

updated infrastructure

The impending infrastructure plan is a big step in the right direction. It's clear the Board has considered many of the issues with the current buildings in the district and the need for additional buildings. Rather unfortunately - there has been increased violence in schools across the nation. As a member of the School Board, I will advocate for increased building admittance security measures across the district.

increased enforcement of bullying policies

FAPS claims to have a zero-tolerance policy on bullying. Then why do I constantly hear stories about students being bullied, especially due to race, gender, and/or sexual orientation? The bullying policy in the student handbook defines what bullying is and sets a maximum suspension. As a member of the School Board, I will advocate for better enforcement of the bullying policy.

Transparency & Accountability

For a school district to be functional to its best ability and for true collaboration with its community, school leadership needs to be completely transparent and held accountable for their actions. Students, families of these students, and the communities school districts serve need to be fully informed of everything that goes on with not only the people they elect to serve them, but also the leaders that they choose. I will advocate for full transparency from the Fenton School Board and other district administrators and will advocate to my best ability to hold these leaders accountable for what they say and do.

reaching higher

increased training for school board members

Achieving excellence starts at the top. The Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) has a Board Member Rewards Program, which many districts across the state take advantage of. There are different levels of Individual Awards, as well as Board of Education Awards. As a member of the School Board, I will advocate that the FAPS School Board take advantage of this program.

increased SEL and DEI training for staff

Increased Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training and implementation has been shown to have significant impact on student achievement and mental wellbeing. To increase respect, comradery, and safety among staff and students, an increase in SEL and DEI training is necessary. Implementation of mandatory training from the National Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity (SEED) Project would be a great way to achieve this. As a member of the School Board, I will advocate for increased SEL and DEI training and implementation throughout the district.

Increased math and reading intervention

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, math and reading scores on state standardized tests fell dramatically in the state of Michigan. While FAPS's students scores are improving, they're as good as they historically have been. As a member of the School Board, I will advocate for an increase in math and reading intervention, especially in students that are on the lower end of growth.

I believe that every single person on this planet deserves the right to happiness - in all sense of the word. This credo not only applies to the community at large, but also (and perhaps, more importantly) to the students of Fenton Area Public Schools.

I believe that every student of Fenton Schools should have equal opportunity access to a fruitful and obstructionless educational career. No student should ever be treated differently because of their age, race or racial expression, religion, sex, gender or gender expression, sexual orientation, or physical or mental ability. I will advocate for each and every student to receive the education, respect, and empathy they deserve.

I believe that society, as a whole, has fallen into this mindset of just getting along in the recent years. Call it a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it needs fixing. Just going through the motions is no way to live life and it's surely no way to foster a successful career, educationally or otherwise. I've made it my mission to instill educational indulgence back into today's students. I wish for every student to feel excitement about learning for the sake of bettering themselves and their community.
